JGarden Description:
The garden describes itself as 'among the finest examples of twentieth century design'. The 25 acre garden owes much to the pre-war work of the American designer Beatrix Farrand and later to that of Percy Cane. More recently a forecourt garden and a Japanese garden have been added. The Japanese garden is a small, dry (karesansui) garden that includes an entry gate, machiai and hillside tamamonoshrub arrangement.
The Dartington Hall estate is 2 miles from Totnes on the A384/A385. Heading from Plymouth take the A385 exit at Marley Head on the A38, and from Exeter take the A384 from Buckfastleigh. For those arriving by train, disembark at Totnes station where there are usually taxis available to bring you to the hall, a five-minute journey.
You ask me why I dwell in the green mountain;
I smile and make no reply for my heart is free of care.
As the peach blossom which flows downstream and is gone into the unknown,
I have a world apart that is not among men.
