JGarden Description:
This site is an 18th-century town house purchased by E.A. Hornel in 1901. Hornel was an artist and member of the 'Glasgow Boys', a well-known group of Scottish painters. He added in art gallery and studio overlooking the Japanese-inspired garden from 1901-1933. The garden leads down to the Dee River estuary. In addition to the garden, the house contains an extensive collection of Scottish books, local historica materials, and 'Yokohama photographs', a series of B & W photos taken by foreigners in the years after the Meiji Restoration. The Broughton House and Gardens are now owned and operated by the National Trust for Scotland after being transferred from the E.A. Hornel Trust in 1997.
