Sansho-en (literally, 'garden of three islands') is built on three islands in an artificial lake, the gardens feature a wide variety of landscaping styles. A Japanese teahouse and Zen rock garden occupy two of the islands, while the third is inaccessible, representing the Buddhist paradise. [description provided by Wayne Johnson.]
The entire site is a 385-acre garden with over 20 different gardens and several educational greenhouses of interest to all members of the family. Narrated tram tours available.
Direction: 25 miles north of downtown Chicago; follow Edens Expressway (I-94) north to Route 41 and exit Lake-Cook Road. Go east 1/2 mile to the entrance.
