Ornaments: The Koto-ji Style Lantern Issue: Jan/Feb 2003 (31) Pages: pp 34-35 Author: JOJG Staff Last Updated: 2/8/2003 Description: An illustrated description of a variant on the yukimi style stone lantern, called the koto-ji lantern. The koto is a traditional Japanese instrument most frequently compared to a zither. The ji of the koto is the fret or bridge upon which the strings rest. Moving the ji changes the tuning of the instrument. A koto-ji style lantern is a 2-legged stone lantern that resembles a koto-ji. The most famous example is in Kenroku-en in Kanazawa, Japan.
